Matangireia - A Space for Māori in Parliament
Celebrating 100 years of Matangireia - the former Maori Affairs Committee Room at Parliament.
The opening of this room in 1922 was the result of years of dedication by important Maori political figures working in close collaboration with leading Maori arts practitioners and experts in Matauranga Maori to bring a space to life that was created by Maori, for Maori, and with Maori.
This book tells the story of this special place, and its significant people. It is Maori history, art history, political history, and social history, all told through the creation and enduring legacy Matangireia.
"This is a story that celebrates place, people, and practice. When we share our knowledge of Maori places like this, created by Maori individuals with expertise they give so generously to their communities, we are recognising the importance of the taonga, and the value of handing down that knowledge."
