  • $3000

Born in 1838, Jane Takotowi Clendon was the daughter of Northland trader Dennis Cochrane and his wife Te Whata, a rangatira of Mangamuka. Jane grew to be an accomplished young woman who operated confidently in both Māori and Pākehā society.

Michael Browne, a descendent of Jane Takotowi Clendon's daughter Frances Louisa, has produced a short booklet describing Jane's early life in the Hokianga. It is a compilation of information about Jane and her whanau garnered from historians and whanau. They were happy to share their knowledge so that others can learn about this extraordinary woman and the challenges she faced. She grew up in a world that was rapidly changing - her legacy is one of love, strength and determination in the face of adversity.
